Sierra Johnson MA TLLP
Specialties: Trauma, Inner Child Work, Spirituality
Locations: Virtual & Royal Oak
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Sierra has shown an intensive interest in the psychological mind and the effects different environments, situations, and genetics can affect an individual. Throughout her experiences in Baltimore, she became increasingly aware of social circumstances and disadvantages that plagued inner-city youth and individuals, without access to mental health services.
Coming from a background in Applied Behavioral Analysis based therapy with children with autism, she possesses a range of skills stemming humanistic psychotherapy, CBT, and mindfulness, to ABA therapy and conditioning.
Sierra earned her Master’s degree at the Michigan School of Psychology in 2019, after completing a practicum in the child and family wing at Lincoln Behavioral Services, a community mental health facility. Practicum at Lincoln Behavioral also included working with clients that needed affordable housing, food, and care, as well as organizing drives to give children Christmas gifts that would not have seen gifts otherwise. She has been RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) certified, and remains involved in the Trevor Project and other LGBT groups around Michigan. She has written and presented essays on Dream Analysis, childhood trauma, and the importance of psychological treatment for children and adolescents.
Sierra is also Wise Mind’s Social Media Coordinator!

I have experience in working with a diverse span of mental health conditions through my experiences in community mental health and private specialty clinics. I have found that I work particularly well with clients struggling with complex diagnoses and behaviors including Bipolar Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Self-Harm, and Dissociative Disorders. I believe that all individuals can benefit from therapy and have a particular passion for working with clients that identify within the LGBTQ community as well as adolescents, families, and young adults.
Life can be full of challenges and sometimes we need someone to talk to in order for us to feel like ourselves again. As a trauma-informed therapist, I believe in providing each of my clients with a nonjudgmental stance, empathy, and a caring attitude through their toughest moments.
I consider my clinical approach to be both person-centered and behavioral. As such, I believe that all clients are doing the best that they can with the skills that they have and that they can benefit from learning additional skills to implement between sessions. I believe that there is a great benefit to processing together in therapy as well as learning and trying skills in our everyday life. If you are looking for a therapist with a passion for discussing the “tough stuff” in life, consider me as a therapist. I recognize that therapy can be challenging at times and It’s my hope that we can work together to make changes in your life at a pace that feels comfortable and effective. I would love to chat with you to see if I would be a good fit for you!
I am also the Lead Clinician for our Private Practice Program.

We live in a fast-paced, demanding, and confusing world. We experience trauma in many facets of our lives, almost on a daily basis. As you try to navigate it all, you may feel like you’re drowning, aimless, and overwhelmed. You want to feel confident in the choices you make, comfortable in your own mind and body, and capable of handling the obligations of your life.
I work with people like you who are struggling with imposter syndrome, anxiety, overwhelm, depression, trauma; people who are navigating life changes, grief, crisis, and the fear of the unknown. My approach is person-centered and solution-focused, meaning that I meet you where you are, at the intersection of all your identities and through the lens of the traumas you have experienced, and we will look for solutions to your concerns together, while acknowledging (and where possible, targeting) the systems of oppression that may be contributing to your pain. I provide space to face fears and realities you want to avoid, but know you need to address if you’re going to move past them. Together, we’ll explore techniques to turn down the noise and the expectations so that you can hear your own wants and needs, and we’ll work to strengthen your sense of unconditional self-worth.
I recently graduated from the University of Michigan with my MSW. I have worked as a crisis counselor for almost two years. I have completed trainings in trauma and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and I am always adding new skills to my repertoire. Before I became a therapist, I was a licensed attorney and used that expertise to empower Chicago residents to find answers to legal questions independently, support survivors of sexual assault within the criminal justice system, and strengthen community resources for domestic violence survivors and their pets.
It takes tremendous strength and courage to ask for help, to let go of familiar but unhealthy coping strategies in order to reach for unfamiliar peace. Join me in therapy and let’s explore ways to find your unique peace of mind.

Living with a mental health condition is a difficult path to walk. It can seem like there is no way out, but there is. Sometimes we struggle with the relationship with ourselves. This can happen through depression, anxiety, trauma or just a turn in life circumstance. When these things happen, we can find ourselves feeling isolated and alone. As a clinical social worker, I have a deep understanding of how our emotions can drive us.
We often can end up developing coping strategies that may end up being unhelpful. Sometimes we try to manage our mental health with substance use. This feels as if it works…for a time. Sometimes this ends up spiraling out of control and we find ourselves feeling worse than we did before. As a Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor, I am here to help. I have years of experience working in recovery. As a person in recovery myself, I can understand the struggles, temptations, and pitfalls that face us on our journey. Together we can develop a comprehensive treatment strategy to help you transition into the lifestyle that you want, free from drugs and/or alcohol.
I treat depression, anxiety, past and current trauma as well as the consequences of substance use disorder. These consequences can include; relationship issues, job loss, and legal troubles such as incarceration and probation.
You do not have to experience these things alone. With support, you can make it through whatever it is that you are going through.
I provide Substance Use Assessments as well.

I am a licensed psychologist with degrees in forensic and clinical psychology. I have spent extensive time working within the criminal justice system and those impacted by being in that system, including in a variety of settings (jails, prisons, community-based programs, private practice) and with different populations (men, women, and children; sex, violent, and substance-related offenses). I specialize in helping individuals within the criminal justice system adjust to incarceration, community reintegration, are struggling with substance abuse/addictions, and/or require sex offense treatment. This work essentially amounts to practice and research of carceral psychology.
